Why would you want a private server for your favorite game?

There are many reasons why would you want to run your favorite game on a private server. First of all, you get to be the Boss :) You can tweak the game in terms of look and feel, create your own community of gamers, invite or bam players, set specific game and server preferences, and also charge money for the service if you want

OK, I can run a server from my home basement, why paying a hosting company?

Well, you can certainly do that but there are few things to keep in mind - First, a server needs to run 24/7/4 and you need to calculate the power as well as cooling costs. Then you neen to add up hardware, security, networking, router, firewall, software and system management. Very soon you'll get to 5-10 times the cost of a slick, fast and secure VPS hosten in a professional datacenter/cloud system with perfect network and skilled technicians looking over your server.

Which operating system is best for my gaming server?

You need to check this with your gaming vedor. If your game can run on both Linux and Windows, we advise running Linux. It is cheaper, faster and more easy to secure. You might also use your game VPS for other services such as backups, web or mail, so consider this too when choosing an OS

Can I get a control panel with my server?

While it's not needed to run a game server, a control panel like cPanel or Plesk is also taking caring of the server software, updates and security. If you don't want to have someone managing your server, installing a decent control panel and setting it on auto-update is a good starting point :)
