Linux/cPanel shared hosting FAQ [4 Questions]

1. What is shared web hosting and what the plans include?

Shared Hosting is a technique and technology through which one server can be used to store hundreds or thousands of sites, logically/virtually separating each client and client on the server, maintaining information security and leaking information between accounts and accounts, and managing server resources that each client can use from the total available resources. On Linux servers we use a unique operating system - Cloud Linux and the Windows servers use a security system managed by the Plesk management interface that ensures maximum separation according to the Windows operating system.

2. What does the hosting package include on a shared server?

A hosting package on a Linux or Windows shared server includes disk space for Web use, support for a variety of databases, e-mail services, various management interfaces to perform administrative operations, statistics, backups, drivers for various applications, as well as security mechanisms, WAF, virus scanning, managing anti-spam settings and more.

3. Can I upgrade the package I signed up for? Do I pay only for the difference only?

Indeed, the package can be upgraded at any time and pay for the difference between the old and new package. You can also add plugins from the Customer Center to the package, such as a 1 or 2 gigabyte add-on disk space for different periods. We recommend upgrading your existing package before adding different disk space plug-ins because upgrading the package offers more extras besides disk space.

4. Is there a refund on site hosting payments?

Absolutely! The last thing we want is to take money for a service that doesn't suit you! We guarantee a full refund during the first 30 days as well as a relative refund, net of periodic discounts given on each annual payment or more.

5. What is the difference between Linux hosting and Windows hosting?

We recommend that you place sites written in PHP, HTML/Bootstrap, Perl, Python, nodeJS on Linux servers unless interaction with .NET-based systems is required. Windows servers are designed to run .NET sites along with MS-SQL databases. They also know how to run PHP and MySQL databases but not as optimally as on Linux and of course there is the licensing cost of Windows which raises the price.

6. Which management interfaces are provided with the shared hosting packages @ Webgate?

On Linux servers we run whm/cPanel system. On Windows servers we run the Plesk Obsidian interface. The interfaces have various plugins such as Imunify360, Wordpress Toolkit, Softaculous on Linux servers as well as a number of complementary modules for Windows servers, which among other things allow the management of various types of databases and more.

7. What is a DNS server ? Does the hosting package include DNS services?

All of our hosting packages come with full DNS services. The master server is in conjunction with the hosting, while at least one secondary server is on another continent, in order to redirect mail to a secondary server and DNS records that are not related to the hosting itself. Our DNS servers are monitored at all times and protected by various anti-dados systems. Also, we do not use central DNS servers but use a pair of servers for each single hosting server. This allows us to better deal with attacks and their effect on the number of customers at a given time.

8. What e-mail services are provided together with the hosting packages in Webgate?

As part of the hosting package, the customer receives a complete set of e-mail management tools. Using the interfaces, the customer can set up mailboxes, references, shortcuts as well as view and send mail using network mail interfaces provided with hosting. All mailboxes are remotely accessible by all the different postal programs such as Outlook, Thunderbird, etc. For full Imap/POP3 support boxes, servers support SSL to secure communications, and there is full support for digitally signing outgoing messages, checking incoming messages, antivirus and anti-spam services, and more.

9. What databases can be stored in my Webgate hosting account?

On the Linux servers is Installed MariaDB which fully replaces MySQL and in fact it is the free version of MySQL, which became a commercial product several years ago and was purchased by Oracle. MySQL is also installed on Windows servers, along with several versions of MS-SQL (2008,2012,2016,2019). Additional databases such as mongoDB can be installed on virtual servers

10. How many sites can be stored in a hosting package?

There is no exact number but you have to keep in mind a few things when deciding to use one hosting accounts for several sites - the resources of the package such as CPU/RAM/Disk are shared and inseparable. The server security system will not necessarily protect malicious actions that a damaged site in a shared hosting package can cause to another site, on the same account. If the sites are small and well maintained you can also place dozens in one account but if you want maximum performance and security it is better to have one site in the account.

11. What is Litespeed Web Server/LS-Cache Plugin?

In order to provide better performance, especially for PHP/Wordpress sites on Linux servers, we use Litespeed commercial web server software, which unlike the apache server provided by default with cPanel is primarily designed for PHP/HTML work and thus more efficient and faster. It comes together with a Caching plugin for Wordford systems called LS-Cache which together deliver optimal results and incredible speed to WordPress sites

12. What is Wordpress Toolkit and should I manage my WordPress installation with it?

Wordpress Toolkit is an installation and maintenance manager for wordpress websites, from cPanel. The module "reads" the existing installations on the server and allows them to be managed over the Admin systems of the WordPress itself in terms of managing updates, templates, plugins, security, backups and restores, creating Staging Site, and many more functions. Webgate has the Deluxe version of Wordpress Toolkit enabled.

13. What can I do with Softaculous Application Manager?

Softaculous offers fast and secure installations as well as maintenance for over 350 different web apps, from WordPress, Drupal, Magneto to a variety of commercial apps like WHMCS. From a test we did, at least to WordPress websites, we found that the installation manager performs a high-quality installation and takes into account a lot of information security parameters that are sometimes forgotten when doing manual installations :)

14. Do I get a free SSL certificate with Webgate hosting?

Absolutely! Each domain in the hosting packages on Linux/Windows servers automatically receives a free SSL certificate and is recognised by most browsers. For Linux servers, the certificate is issued directly by cPanel in collaboration with Sectigo and Windows servers by Plesk's Lets Encrypt plugin.

15. Are the mail/FTP/cPanel servers protected by SSL?

Yes! FTP servers on Linux servers as well as Windows servers come with full FTPS support and a valid valid certificate recognised by most common clients

16. Can I install a private SSL certificate in my hosting account?

Undoubtedly! You can purchase an SSL certificate from us as well as import or buy a certificate from any other provider and install it on our servers. The management interface provides a complete mechanism for creating a temporary certificate, creating keys, signing requests - CSR, as well as importing an existing certificate and installing it on a domain in a hosting account

17. Is a dedicated IP required to install a private SSL certificate?

not. All shared hosting servers support SNI technology that eliminates the need for a dedicated IP address for each domain to install an SSL certificate

18. Can I purchase a private IP address for my hosting account?

yes. Sometimes there is a real justification and need to allocate a dedicated IP address at the expense of hosting (Linux/Windows) and therefore we allow it. The service has a monthly cost and the IP address has a reverse-dns service as needed.

19. How is my site backed up? Is it possible to recover alone?

The shared hosting systems have a backup of at least 7 days back accessible from within the management interface. The restoration is performed through the administrative interfaces or individually using FTP or database management tools. We recommend that you read about backup and recovery capabilities in the cPanel and Plesk guides

20. My site was hacked do I deal with the event and what should I do?

Although there’s no straight “one fits all answer”, first of all, access to the world must be closed until the end of treatment. Second, do not directly restore the site from a backup until it is unclear how it was violated. Keep the site backed up at the moment of the break-in, you may need the material from there, albeit in part. Don't delete logs! They tell the whole break-in story... Exchange passwords for all services on your account, including FTP, cPanel/Plesk, databases, mailboxes, and access to the site's own management system. Ask for help from a website rehabilitation expert after a hack, sometimes it's big on webmasters with no programming knowledge.

21. What is the advantage of hosting a website in Israel compared to abroad?

The geographic proximity of the server can certainly help performance, especially if the customers are mostly from a country like Israel. In fact, about half of the users of our servers located on Bezeq International's server farm in Israel do not access the intranet at all, but remain in private networks between suppliers in Israel. When you want to make use of rich media like movies and video/radio broadcasts it starts to be absolutely significant!

22. Is it possible to send quantitative/advertising mail through a Webgate hosting account?

NO. The hosting servers and mailboxes may be blacklisted because of quantitative mail being issued through them and we ask not to issue quantitative mail through them of any kind. There are also limits on how much mail an domain can spend per hour and how much returning mail can produce in order to keep the server free of spammers and these things definitely collide. We offer virtual servers in the cloud which can be used for quantitative mail delivery (not spam of course) and a selection of additional uses.

23. What security systems does Webgate provide to the sites it stores?

We take the issue of information security very seriously in all aspects, from physical access to servers to WAF systems on the servers themselves that only take legitimate traffic entry. We use Fortigate's Cluster Firewalls, an anti-Ddos system provided by the server farm, Imunify-360 system on Linux servers along with cloudLinux operating system and many other editorials and modules that ensure fast and safe continuity of operations for our customers. We say all this carefully since creating information security depends on the customer as much as the hosting company and despite everything we do, websites are still hacked and we will not always be able to stop everything. We wish to keep content management systems, templates and plugins up to date at all times and to act responsibly in providing access to the account, managing passwords, etc.

24. Where are Webgate’s servers physically located??

As of 2021, all Webgate servers are located in Israel at Bezeq International's server farm in Petah Tikva. Our DR systems and our overseas customers are managed by us through cloud provider Linode, which provides POPs on several continents and dozens of countries.

25. How do I upload the site content and databases to Webgate servers?

On the shared hosting servers we allow access via FTP/FTPS as well as through advanced File Manager which is available from within the management interface.

26. Is there a traffic restriction in Webgate's shared hosting?

Starting in 2021, we have lowered traffic restrictions on shared hosting accounts, but at the same time we are reviewing the use of high-consumption accounts and making sure that the content does not infringe copyright and the use of traffic has entered the "Reasonable Use" setting. We don't allow the hosting/streaming of large movies, rich presentations or large sound files designed for massive downloads. Remember , the account is for storing websites and not storing apps or rich content. We have other dedicated systems for this, especially cloud servers.

27. Is it possible to run scheduled commands (crons) on Webgate servers?

Yes. At least 5 minutes apart and not perform operations that excessively consume cpu/ram. If your website does a lot of calculations/algorithmics/reports etc. A sign that you need to be on a cloud server or dedicated server depends on the computing power required.

28. I am interested in storing information about my servers, what is allowed and what is not allowed to store?

Since the servers are in Israel, they are subject to Israeli jurisdiction in all matters pertaining to the Databases Law. If your site stores content, regardless of the purpose, you should consult with a suitable lawyer and make sure that you do not break the law and if the stored material is considered a database you are responding to the requirements of the law on the subject. For the avoidance of doubt, Webgate will not in any way be considered a repository manager or holds a database under the Databases Act. The shared hosting servers are not suitable in terms of information security for storing registered databases, but they can be hosted on dedicated servers, where security is much higher.

29. Which operating systems operate Webgate's Linux/Windows servers?

Our Linux servers run on Cloud Linux OS, the optimal collaborative web hosting system. Windows servers run windows 2012R2,2016, 2019 within a dedicated and private Webgate cloud that enables, among other things, Snapchat gibbons and the management of smart server resources.

Virtual Private Servers - VPS [Questions 9]

1. What is a virtual private server? How is it different from a regular server?

A virtual server is a dynamic "piece" of a physical server, performed by a virtualization system installed on the server as an operating system, for example VMware, Proxmox, XEN/KVM, Virtuozzo and more. The virtualization system knows how to produce virtual servers which anyone can have different resources and operating systems. Within the server there is almost no difference from a regular server, the virtual server looks and behaves exactly like a normal physical server. The advantage lies in the survival, redundancy and scalability of virtual servers

2. What is cloud hosting?

A “cloud” is an overall concept for high-redundant computing systems that use large quantities of physical servers together with storage arrays to create virtual servers in the cloud, an advanced product that allows a virtual server to use "floating" hardware and can be changed at any time, without damaging the services of that server. A cloud server can be increased/decreased at any time, allowing cost savings and payment only while the server is indeed "working hard."

3. What resources are allocated to a virtual server in the cloud?

A cloud server can start from one core, one gigabyte of memory and reach up to 16 or 32 cores (depending on the shift) and understand memory up to 256GB or more. In terms of disk space, you can get servers with a local attached or Storage Block-based disk. A virtual server has one or more standalone network cards, and a private network can also be generated between different servers belonging to the same client, such as a 10GB/sec private sql traffic network.

4. What cloud technologies are operated by Webgate?

Webgate uses a variety of technologies to provide cloud computing services, such as VMware, XEN, Virtuozzo and more recently Proxmox

5. What backup systems does Webgate operates for virtual and dedicated servers?

Webgate operates a backup server + tape robot along with CA's Arcserve software. We back up the servers using the Snapshot + Filesystem method according to various backup plans.

The server can be increased with additional resources in case the main server falls so that the cost while everything is in order is very low and during a malfunction increase the drp server's resources as needed, within a few minutes!

9. Does Webgate provide VPN connection for secured remote connection to my server?

yes. You can purchase a VPN account with which you can access your server from anywhere in the world securely, while keeping the server closed to the world. The service is provided using the SSL-VPN method on the Firewalls of Fortinet/Fortigate

אחסון אתרים לריסלרים [Questions 3]

1. What is Reseller and what are his responsibilities towards his customers?

Resellers are buying large accounts from the hosting company and divides it into small accounts for his clients. Resellers can build packages as he sees fit and receives an interface to manage his customers, including branding and visibility options according to the needs of the Resellers. Our systems provide white label with the option while creating a service mechanism built on the Resellers brand with full transparency against it

2. How many accounts/domains/websites can be stored in a Reseller account?

In general there is no limit but at some point it is worth taking a private or physical server since along with the size come additional needs such as controlling the hardware or the server as a whole, as well as integrating billing and control systems. We think a reseller account could easily hold 100 accounts.

3. Are reseller accounts suitable for large websites?

בnot. Although reseller accounts come with a large amount of disk space and the ability to open domains and websites unlimited within the account cap, it is not suitable for large sites but for many small sites. Large sites consume significant amounts of CPU/RAM besides disk space and have a private server in the cloud, which can be configured according to the needs of the site and the client.

SSL Certificates [4 Questions]

1. What is SSL and what is a security certificate?

SSL - Secure Sockets Layers is a browser-to-server information encryption protocol as well as a site identity verification mechanism with clients. Companies that issue certificates - Certificate Authorities use source certificates found in browsers through which the identity of a site can be verified. The company verifies the owners of the site by email sent to the admin@domain address, and in cases of an EV certificate, more in-depth verification is carried out with the person confirming the certificate.

2. What are the differences between the SSL certificates that Webgate offers?

The differences between the certificates are expressed in the amount of domains or subdomains they cover, the different verification buttons they provide, EV verification - a green bar in the address bar in the browser as well as insurance they provide in the event of a hack. We recommend visiting the websites of the companies that issue the certificates and thoroughly examine the components of the certificate you wish to purchase and make sure that it includes all the technical and administrative functions for your organization.

3. Can Webgate install the certificate for me?

For customers with a hosting account or server @ Webgate, we will install certificates free of charge, depending on the customer's need and request.
